bq24195L and bq24195 are highly integrated switch-mode battery management and system power path management devices for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries in mobile power banks, tablets, and other portable equipment. The low-impedance power path optimizes switch-mode operating efficiency, reduces battery charge time, and extends battery life during the discharge phase. An I2C serial interface with charge and system settings makes this device a truly flexible solution. The device supports a wide range of input sources, including standard USB host ports, USB charging ports, and high-power DC adapters. To set the default input current limit, the bq24195L and bq24195 detect input sources compliant with USB Battery Charging Specification 1.2. The bq24195/bq24195L comply with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 power specifications with input current and voltage regulation. The bq24195L and bq24195 support battery boost operation, providing 5.1V on the PMID pin at a minimum current of 1.0A (bq24195L) or 2.1A (bq24195). Power path management regulates the system voltage to slightly above the battery voltage, but prevents it from dropping below the 3.5V minimum system voltage (programmable). With this feature, the system remains operational even when the battery is fully depleted or removed. When the input current or voltage limit is reached, power path management automatically reduces the charge current to 0. As the system load continues to increase, the power path discharges the battery before meeting the system power demand. This supplement mode operation prevents input source overload. The device initiates and completes a charge cycle without software control. It automatically detects the battery voltage and charges the battery in three phases: pre-charge, constant current, and constant voltage. At the end of the charge cycle, the charger automatically terminates when the charge current drops below a preset threshold during the constant voltage phase. When the entire battery drops below the recharge threshold, the charger automatically initiates another charge cycle. The device provides multiple safety features for battery charging and system operation, including NTC thermistor monitoring, charge safety timer, and overvoltage/overcurrent protection. When the junction temperature exceeds 120°C (configurable), thermal regulation reduces the charge current. The STAT output reports charge status and any fault conditions. When a fault occurs, INT immediately notifies the host.
