This device meets TIA/EIA-232-F requirements and provides an electrical interface between asynchronous communication controllers and serial port connectors. A charge pump and four small external capacitors support single-supply operation from 3V to 5.5V. The device operates at typical data signaling rates up to 500kbit/s, with a maximum driver output slew rate of 30V/μs. The MAX3222E can be placed in shutdown mode by driving the shutdown (PWRDOWN) input low, drawing only 1μA from the supply. When the device is shut down, the receivers remain active while the drivers are placed in a high-impedance state. In addition, the on-board charge pump is disabled during shutdown; V+ drops to VCC and V– rises to GND. The receiver outputs can also be placed in a high-impedance state by driving the enable (EN) input high. The MAX3222E consists of two line drivers, two line receivers, and a dual charge-pump circuit, with pin-to-pin (serial port connection pins, including GND) ±15kV ESD protection.
