Introduction
MAX3222E/MAX3232E/MAX3237E/MAX3241E/MAX3246E are +3.0V-powered EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 communication interface ICs featuring low power consumption, high data rates, and enhanced ESD protection. The enhanced ESD architecture protects all transmitter outputs and receiver inputs against ±15kV IEC 1000-4-2 air-gap discharge, ±8kV IEC 1000-4-2 contact discharge (±9kV for MAX3246E), and ±15kV Human Body Model discharge. The MAX3237E's logic pins and receiver I/O pins provide the same protection, while its transmitter output pins are protected against ±15kV Human Body Model discharge. Using a proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage, these devices deliver true RS-232 performance via an internal dual charge pump from a +3.0V to +5.5V supply. Operating from a +3.3V supply, the charge pump requires only four small 0.1µF capacitors. Each device is guaranteed to maintain RS-232 output levels at a 250kbps data rate. The MAX3237E is guaranteed to operate at 250kbps in standard mode and up to 1Mbps in MegaBaud™ mode while maintaining RS-232 output levels. The MAX3222E/MAX3232E include two transmitters and two receivers. The MAX3222E features a 1µA shutdown mode to reduce power consumption in battery-powered portable systems. In shutdown mode, the MAX3222E receivers remain active, allowing peripheral monitoring while drawing only 1µA of supply current. The MAX3222E and MAX3232E are pin, package, and function compatible with the industry-standard MAX242 and MAX232, respectively. The MAX3241E/MAX3246E provide a complete serial port (3 drivers/5 receivers) designed specifically for laptop and sub-notebook computers. The MAX3237E (5 drivers/3 receivers) is ideal for peripherals requiring high-speed data transfer. All these devices feature a shutdown mode in which all receivers remain active while drawing only 1µA (MAX3241E/MAX3246E) or 10nA (MAX3237E) of supply current. The MAX3222E, MAX3232E, and MAX3241E are available in space-saving SO, SSOP, TQFN, and TSSOP packages. The MAX3237E is offered in an SSOP package, and the MAX3246E comes in an ultra-small 6 x 6 UCSP package.
