Introduction
The AD8232 is an integrated signal conditioning module for ECG and other biopotential measurement applications. The device is designed to extract, amplify, and filter weak biopotential signals in the presence of noise caused by motion or remote electrode placement. This design allows a ultralow power ADC or embedded microcontroller to easily acquire the output signal.
The AD8232 uses a two-pole high-pass filter to eliminate motion artifacts and electrode half-cell potentials. This filter is tightly coupled with the instrumentation amplifier architecture to achieve single-stage high gain and high-pass filtering, saving space and cost.
The AD8232 uses an uncommitted op-amp to create a three-pole low-pass filter, eliminating additional noise. Users can select the cutoff frequencies of all filters to meet the requirements of different application types.
To improve common-mode rejection of system line frequency and other unwanted interference, the AD8232 integrates an amplifier for driven lead applications such as right leg drive (RLD).
The AD8232 includes a fast restore function that reduces the otherwise lengthy settling tail of the high-pass filter. If a signal transient occurs at the amplifier rail voltage (such as a leads-off condition), the AD8232 automatically switches to a higher filter cutoff state. This feature allows the AD8232 to recover quickly, enabling valid measurements to be obtained as soon as the leads are connected to the electrodes on the subject.
The AD8232 is available in a 4 mm × 4 mm, 20-lead LFCSP package. It is rated for a temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and operates over −40°C to +85°C.
