Introduction
The MICRO SWITCH™ LSX Hazardous Area Switch is designed for harsh environments. With its rugged housing featuring integral flame paths, it is approved for hazardous locations and NEMA-classified environments. These flame paths force internally expanding gases to cool below the ignition temperature of the external atmosphere before escaping the housing. The LSX also offers form-and-fit interchangeability with the MICRO SWITCH™ BX Series hazardous area switches. An optional mounting plate provides the same form and mounting as the standard HDLS Series (heavy-duty limit switches). The LSX Series accommodates most HDLS operating heads and circuit options. Due to the potentially hazardous environment, rotary-actuated LSX Series products are designed for use with levers incorporating non-sparking actuators. Other LSX Series switch types — plunger-actuated and wobble-actuated products — have non-sparking actuators integrated. The field adjustability of the MICRO SWITCH™ LSX limit switch (clockwise/counterclockwise operation, rotatable operating head) facilitates matching the switch to the application. Momentary, maintained, sequential, or center-neutral action is available. The head design features a keyed interface for a more secure head-to-body connection, with the head indexable in four positions at 90° intervals. Captive mounting screws on the head help prevent screw loss during head replacement or repositioning. Self-lifting clamp terminals save wiring time. The die-cast zinc head and aluminum body make the LSX suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. A diaphragm seal between the head and body provides additional protection. The switch continues to function when exposed to many harsh environments and corrosive chemicals. Standard seals are suitable for most applications; however, optional fluorocarbon or fluorosilicone seals are available for many harsh chemical, high-temperature, or low-temperature environments. Hazardous area switches are available with silver or gold-plated contacts to handle electrical load requirements ranging from low-level to power control.
Features
- Industry-leading product breadth
- Watertight sealing to NEMA 1, 3, 4, 6, 13
- Explosion-proof ratings to NEMA 7 (Class 1, Divisions 1 & 2, Groups B, C, D) and NEMA 9 (Class 2, Divisions 1 & 2, Groups E, F, G)
- Wide variety of actuator heads and multiple non-sparking actuators
- All-metal drive system for consistent operating characteristics across a wide temperature range — longer service life than drive systems with plastic components (no frequent adjustments required)
- Keyed head design with 90° indexing in four positions for more secure head-to-body connection
- Captive mounting screws on head help prevent screw loss during head replacement or repositioning
- Self-lifting clamp terminals save wiring time
- Die-cast zinc head and aluminum body for indoor and outdoor applications
- Diaphragm seal between head and body provides additional protection
- Standard seals suitable for most applications; optional fluorocarbon or fluorosilicone seals available for harsh chemical, high-temperature, or low-temperature environments
- Optional silver or gold-plated contacts to handle various electrical load requirements
Applications
- Grain elevators: monitoring jammed grain conveyors, sliding gate positions, diverter valves, and leg positions
- Control valves and actuators: detecting "open" or "closed" valve positions
- Land drilling: detecting end-of-travel positions for telescoping operations of drilling equipment
- Pipelines: monitoring pig positions and pipeline health
- Petrochemical and chemical plants: monitoring positions of control valves, doors, and gates
- Water treatment plants: detecting control valve positions
- Paint booths: door interlocks for sliding or hinged doors or gates
- Hazardous waste handling: commonly used as valve position monitors
