Introduction
The AD8338 is a variable gain amplifier (VGA) suited for applications requiring a fully differential signal path, low power, low noise, and precise gain from LF to 18 MHz. The device can also operate with single-ended input if needed. The basic gain function is linear, with a nominal gain range of 0 dB to 80 dB, corresponding to a control voltage of 0.1 V to 1.1 V on the gain pin. The gain range can be shifted up or down via the INPD and INMD pins, which connect directly to the internal summing node. The AD8338 includes additional circuitry for offset correction and AGC functionality. DC offset voltage is eliminated through an offset correction circuit that functions as a high-pass filter. The corner frequency of the high-pass filter is set by an external resistor. The AGC function varies the gain of the AD8338 to maintain a constant RMS output voltage. The target RMS output voltage is user-controlled via voltage. A capacitor to ground on the DETO pin controls the AGC response time. The AD8338 also allows users to access the internal summing node, providing additional versatility. With just a few discrete components, users can customize the device's gain, bandwidth, input impedance, and noise performance to meet their specific application requirements. The AD8338 operates from a single 3.0 V to 5.0 V supply and is highly power-efficient, drawing as little as 3 mA quiescent current. It is available in a RoHS-compliant 3 mm × 3 mm, 16-lead LFCSP, rated for the −40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range.
