Introduction
ICL7660 and ICL7660A are monolithic CMOS power supply circuits offering distinct performance advantages over previous devices. The ICL7660 converts positive input voltages in the range of +1.5V to +10.0V to negative voltages, with complementary output voltages ranging from -1.5V to -10.0V; the ICL7660A performs the same conversion for input voltages from +1.5V to +12.0V, with complementary output voltages ranging from -1.5V to -12.0V. The charge pump and charge storage functions require only 2 non-critical external capacitors.
The ICL7660 and ICL7660A can also be connected for use as voltage multipliers, producing output voltages up to +18.6V with a +10V input. The IC integrates a series DC power supply regulator, RC oscillator, voltage level translator, and four output power MOS switches. A unique logic element detects the most negative voltage in the device, ensuring that the source-substrate junctions of the output N-channel switches are not forward-biased, thereby guaranteeing latch-up-free operation. With a supply voltage of 5.0V, the nominal oscillator frequency under no-load conditions is 10kHz. This frequency can be reduced by adding an external capacitor to the OSC pin, or the oscillator can be driven by an external clock. The LV pin can be grounded to bypass the internal series regulator, improving low-voltage (LV) operation. At medium to high voltages (+3.5V to +10.0V for the ICL7660, +3.5V to +12.0V for the ICL7660A), the LV pin should be left floating to prevent device latch-up.
