Introduction
The DS1302 trickle-charge real-time clock IC contains a real-time clock/calendar and a nonvolatile static RAM byte. It communicates with a microprocessor via a simple serial interface. The real-time clock/calendar counts seconds, minutes, hours, days, days of the week, months, and years, with automatic end-of-month date adjustment for months shorter than 31 days and leap-year correction. The clock operates in either 12-hour or 24-hour format. The RAM byte can be used for temporary storage of critical data. Synchronous serial communication simplifies the interface between the DS1302 and a microprocessor. Clock/RAM communication requires only three wires: (1) RST (reset), (2) I/O (data line), and (3) SCLK (serial clock). Data can be transferred in single-byte (one byte per transfer) or burst mode (up to 31 bytes). The DS1302 operates at extremely low power, consuming less than 1μW to retain data and clock information.
