The 78LXX series three-terminal positive voltage regulators are available in several fixed output voltages, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. As a replacement for zener diode-resistor combinations, the 78LXX typically improves output impedance by two orders of magnitude while reducing quiescent current. These regulators provide local on-board regulation, eliminating distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. The available voltages make the 78LXX suitable for use in logic systems, instrumentation, hi-fi audio, and other solid-state electronic equipment. With adequate heatsinking, the regulator can deliver 100 mA of output current. It incorporates current limiting to restrict peak output current to a safe value. Safe-area protection is also provided for the output transistor to limit internal power dissipation. A thermal shutdown circuit prevents IC overheating if internal power dissipation becomes excessive relative to the heatsinking provided.
