Introduction
The 74HC/HCT138 decodes three binary-weighted address inputs (A0, A1, and A2) into eight mutually exclusive outputs (Y0~Y7). The device features three enable inputs (E1, E2, and E3). All outputs remain HIGH unless E1 and E2 are LOW and E3 is HIGH. This multiple-enable functionality allows easy parallel expansion to a 32-line-to-1 (5-to-32) decoder using one inverter and four AiP74HC/HCT138 ICs. The AiP74HC/HCT138 can function as an 8-output demultiplexer by using one active-LOW enable input as a data input while the remaining enable inputs serve as strobe signals. Input clamping diodes are provided, allowing the use of current-limiting resistors to interface inputs to voltages exceeding VCC.
