MAX489 is a low-power transceiver for RS-422 communications. Each unit contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX489 reduces the driver slew rate to minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission at up to 50kbps. These transceivers draw supply currents between 120μA and 500μA with the driver disabled and with no load or full load. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. The driver features short-circuit current limiting and is protected by a thermal shutdown circuit that places the driver outputs in a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. The receiver inputs include a failsafe feature that guarantees a logic-high output when the inputs are open. The MAX489 is suitable for full-duplex communications.
