Introduction
The MAX487E is a low-power RS-485 and RS-422 transceiver designed for harsh environments. Both driver outputs and receiver inputs are protected against ±15kV ESD without latch-up. The device contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX487E features a reduced slew-rate driver that minimizes EMI and reduces signal reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission at up to 250kbps. When the driver is disabled and the bus is fully loaded, these transceivers consume only 120μA of supply current. In addition, the MAX487E features a low-current shutdown mode in which it consumes only 0.5μA. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. Short-circuit current is limited, and a thermal shutdown circuit forces the outputs into a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. The receiver inputs feature a failsafe function that ensures a logic-high output when the inputs are open-circuit. The MAX487E receiver inputs present one-quarter unit load impedance, allowing up to 18 transceivers on the bus. The MAX487E is designed for half-duplex applications.
