Introduction
The MAX487 is a low-power transceiver for RS-485 communications. Each device contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX487 features a reduced driver slew rate to minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission up to 250kbps. When the driver is disabled and in an idle or fully loaded state, the supply current consumption of these transceivers ranges from 120μA to 500μA. Additionally, the MAX487 features a low-current shutdown mode in which only 0.1μA is consumed. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. The driver includes short-circuit current limiting and is protected by a thermal shutdown circuit that places the driver outputs in a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. Inputs feature a failsafe design that guarantees a logic-high output when the input is open-circuited. The MAX487 has a quarter-unit-load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 transceivers to be connected on a single bus. The MAX487 is designed for half-duplex applications.
