The MAX483 is a low-power transceiver for RS-485 communications. Each device contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX483 features a reduced driver slew rate to minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, allowing error-free data transmission at rates up to 50kbps. Supply current consumption for these transceivers ranges from 120μA to 500μA when idle or with the driver disabled and fully loaded. The MAX483 features a low-current shutdown mode in which only 0.1μA is consumed. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. The driver features short-circuit current limiting and is protected by a thermal shutdown circuit that places the driver outputs in a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. Inputs feature a failsafe characteristic that guarantees a logic-high output when the input is open-circuited. For communications, the MAX483 is designed for half-duplex operation.
