Introduction
The MAX481 is a low-power transceiver for RS485 communications. Each device contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX481 driver has no slew-rate limiting, allowing it to transmit data at up to 2.5Mbps. The transceiver draws supply current between 120μA and 500μA with the driver enabled, under either no-load or full-load conditions. In addition, the MAX481 features a low-current shutdown mode in which it draws only 0.1μA. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. The driver incorporates short-circuit current limiting and is protected by a thermal shutdown circuit that places the driver outputs into a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. The receiver inputs feature a failsafe function that guarantees a logic-high output when the inputs are open-circuited. The MAX481 is designed for half-duplex applications.
