Introduction
The MAX1487 is a low-power transceiver for RS-485 communications. Each device contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX1487 driver slew rate is not limited, allowing them to transmit at speeds up to 2.5Mbps. Supply current for these transceivers ranges from 20μA to 500μA when the driver is disabled and in idle or full-load conditions. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. Drivers feature short-circuit current limiting and are protected by a thermal shutdown circuit that places the driver outputs into a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. The receiver inputs feature a fail-safe function that guarantees a logic-high output if the inputs are open-circuited. The MAX1487 receiver input impedance is one-quarter unit load, allowing up to 128 transceivers to be connected to the bus. The MAX1487 is designed for half-duplex applications.
