Introduction
The SM712 transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode is designed for asymmetric (12V to -7V) protection in multipoint data transmission standard RS-485 applications. The SM712 can protect equipment from transient voltages caused by ESD, EFT, and lightning strikes.
The SM712 features 400W (tp = 8/20μs) power handling capability to address higher transient voltage levels that may occur in extended common-mode applications. This improves device reliability and eliminates the "guesswork" required when using Zener diodes not rated for such transient conditions.
The SM712 replaces four discrete components by integrating two 12V and two 7V TVS diodes in a single package. This integrated design helps reduce voltage overshoot associated with trace inductance. The SM712's low clamping voltage minimizes stress on protected transceivers. The SOT23 package provides design flexibility for "crowded" PCBs.
