Introduction
The Atmel picoPower ATmega644P is a low-power CMOS 8-bit microcontroller based on the AVR enhanced RISC architecture. By executing powerful instructions in a single clock cycle, the ATmega644P achieves throughput approaching 1 MIPS per MHz. This enables system designers to optimize the device for the balance between power consumption and processing speed. The AVR core combines a rich instruction set with 32 general-purpose working registers. All 32 registers are directly connected to the Arithmetic Logic Unit, allowing two independent registers to be accessed in a single instruction executed within a single clock cycle. The resulting architecture delivers higher code efficiency while achieving throughput up to ten times faster than conventional CISC microcontrollers. The ATmega644P features: 64KB of in-system programmable Flash with read-while-write capability, 2KB EEPROM, 4KB SRAM, 32 general-purpose I/O lines, 32 general-purpose working registers, a real-time counter, three flexible timer/counters with compare modes and PWM, two programmable serial USARTs, a byte-oriented 2-wire serial interface, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC with optional programmable gain differential input stage, a programmable watchdog timer with internal oscillator, an SPI serial port, an IEEE std. 1149.1 compliant JTAG test interface (also used for on-chip debug system access and programming), and six software-selectable power-saving modes. Idle mode halts the CPU while allowing the SRAM, timer/counters, SPI port, and interrupt system to continue operating. Power-down mode saves register contents but freezes the oscillator, disabling all other chip functions until the next interrupt or hardware reset. In power-save mode, the asynchronous timer continues running, allowing the user to maintain a timing reference while the rest of the device sleeps. ADC noise reduction mode stops the CPU and all I/O modules except the asynchronous timer and ADC, minimizing switching noise during ADC conversion. In standby mode, the crystal/resonator oscillator runs while the rest of the device sleeps, enabling very fast startup combined with low power consumption. In extended standby mode, both the main oscillator and the asynchronous timer continue running. Atmel offers the QTouch library for embedding capacitive touch button, slider, and wheel functionality into AVR microcontrollers. The patented charge-transfer signal acquisition provides robust sensing with fully integrated debouncing.
