The ISL3178 is a half-duplex, high-speed transceiver for RS-485/RS-422 communications, integrating one driver and one receiver. It complies with RS-485 and RS-422 balanced communication standards, delivering higher output voltage and faster data rates required by high-speed PROFIBUS applications, and is suitable for industrial and extended industrial (-40°C to +125°C) temperature ranges. The transceiver requires a 5V ±10% supply, within which it provides a minimum differential output voltage of 2.1V, ensuring improved noise immunity and longer transmission distances. Its 1/8 unit load allows up to 160 transceivers to be connected on the same communication bus. The slew-rate-limited driver significantly reduces EMI and reflections, enabling error-free data transmission at rates from 500kbps up to 40Mbps. Operating voltage range is 4.75V to 5.25V, with features including fail-safe, over-temperature protection, current-limiting protection, overvoltage protection, and hot-swap inputs on control ports. Excellent ESD protection is provided, with HBM ±15kV and IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge ±15kV.
