Introduction
Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) normally maintain a high insulation resistance state, essentially equivalent to an open circuit, with negligible impact on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage of the GDT, the gas inside ionizes, causing the GDT to conduct rapidly and clamping the overvoltage to a lower level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from damage due to high-voltage transients. Once the overvoltage disappears, the GDT immediately returns to its high insulation resistance state and normal circuit operation resumes. The 2RB-8S series GDTs are surface mount components. They feature a compact footprint for easy installation on various space-constrained PCBs, while delivering excellent performance. Their low capacitance characteristics minimize signal degradation when used in high-frequency communication circuits. The high insulation resistance ensures no additional losses to circuit performance under normal operating conditions. In addition to communication interface protection, the high surge current capability of this series also makes them suitable for power supply protection.
