KEMET Automotive Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) X7R Dielectric Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors feature a unique flexible termination system integrated with KEMET's standard termination materials. Conductive silver epoxy is used between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system to provide flexibility while maintaining terminal strength, solderability, and electrical performance. This technology was developed to address the primary failure mode of MLCs — flex cracking — which is typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses generated during board flexure and thermal cycling. The flexible termination technology suppresses the transmission of board stress to the rigid ceramic body, thereby reducing flex cracks that can cause degraded insulation resistance or short-circuit failures.

While this technology cannot eliminate mechanical damage that may occur under extreme environmental and operating conditions, it offers superior flex crack resistance compared to standard termination systems. FT-CAP complements KEMET's open-mode, Floating Electrode (FE-CAP), Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP), and KEMET Power Solutions (KPS) product lines by providing a complete portfolio of flex crack resistance solutions.

Combined with the stability of X7R dielectric and designed to meet all capacitance requirements, these flex crack resistant devices are RoHS compliant, offer up to 5mm flexure capability, and exhibit predictable capacitance change over time and voltage. Capacitance change is limited to ±15% relative to ambient temperature over the range of -55°C to +125°C.

Whether used inside or outside the vehicle, these capacitors are designed to deliver reliable performance for mission-critical and safety-critical automotive circuits. Considering potentially harsh environmental conditions, automotive-grade products are subject to more stringent testing protocols and inspection standards.
