Gas discharge tubes utilize inert gas sealed within a ceramic tube to provide an alternative circuit path for voltage spikes. The ceramic housing and nickel connectors enable them to withstand high loads. The SMD2921 gas discharge tube has a surge rating of 1kA, 8/20μs. The square SMD package helps simplify PCB pick-and-place processes. This series of gas discharge tubes is well suited for broadband equipment applications. Their low off-state capacitance is compatible with high-bandwidth applications, and this capacitive load value does not vary with the voltage across the gas discharge tube. The SMD2921 gas discharge tube is designed to protect electrical, multimedia, and communications equipment from overvoltage transients in SMD applications.
