Introduction
Harris Synchro-FET™ series is specifically designed for P6 and Pentium processors, offering a new approach to implementing synchronous rectified buck switching regulators. The Synchro-FET™ replaces two power DMOS devices, one Schottky diode, two gate drivers, and synchronous control circuitry. The complementary drive circuit turns the upper FET on and lower FET off when the PWM input is high; when the PWM input is low, the upper FET turns off and the lower FET turns on. The HIP5011 has a PWM pin that inverts the relationship from input to PHASE. This architecture enables designers to use low-cost single-ended PWM controllers in either current-mode or voltage-mode configurations. The Synchro-FET™ operates in continuous conduction mode, reducing EMI constraints and enabling high-bandwidth operation. Several features ensure easy startup. First, supply current remains within specification as the supply voltage ramps up, with no unexpected surges that could interfere with soft-start or deplete the charge pump. Second, any power-up sequencing of the VCC, VIN, or PWM pins can be used without drawing large currents. Third, the IC becomes operational when VCC exceeds 2V, allowing VCC to be generated by a charge pump powered from VIN.
Features
- Complementary drive, half-bridge power NMOS
- Compatible with low-cost single-output PWM controllers
- Improved efficiency over conventional buck converters with Schottky clamps
- Adaptive shoot-through protection with minimum dead time eliminates external Schottky diode
- Grounded package for low EMI and simplified thermal management
- Low operating current
- Frequency exceeding 1MHz
- Bipolar input option
- Surge protection on all pins
Applications
- 5V to ≤3.3V synchronous buck converter
- Pentium and P6 power supply
- PowerPC power supply
- Bus termination (BTL and GTL)
- 5V motor directly driven by microprocessor
