Introduction
The SS8870 is a brushed DC motor driver designed for printers, appliances, industrial equipment, and other mechatronic motors. It features a dual-input logic-controlled H-bridge driver consisting of four N-channel MOSFETs, capable of delivering a peak output current of 3.6A for bidirectional motor control. By utilizing current decay modes, motor speed can be controlled via PWM on the inputs. When both logic inputs are set low, the motor driver enters a low-power sleep mode.
The SS8870 incorporates integrated current regulation based on the analog input VREF and the voltage at the ISEN pin (proportional to the motor current flowing through an external sense resistor). This allows the device to limit current to a known level, significantly reducing system power requirements and eliminating the need for large bulk capacitors to maintain a stable voltage — particularly during motor startup and stall conditions.
The device provides comprehensive protection against faults and short circuits, including undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overcurrent protection (OCP), and overtemperature protection (OTP).
