Introduction
The EG1615 is a control IC dedicated to DC-to-DC inverter boost and battery charge management in bidirectional inverters (where the same circuit can function as either an inverter or a battery charger). It integrates two 600V half-bridge high-voltage MOS drivers with ±2A output current capability, and features four independent cycle-by-cycle PWM shutdown protections to effectively prevent MOS damage caused by excessive peak currents under extreme conditions. Two SD pins are provided: SD1 for cycle-by-cycle shutdown of driver 1 (HO1 and LO1), and SD2 for cycle-by-cycle shutdown of driver 2 (HO2 and LO2). Combined with external comparators, the SD function enables overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
The EG1615 consists of two main functional blocks. The first is inverter boost control, which converts the low-voltage DC from the battery to a high-voltage DC to supply the high voltage required by the downstream DC/AC inverter stage. The second is charger buck control, which converts the high-voltage DC output from the upstream PFC stage into low-voltage DC to provide constant-voltage/constant-current (CV/CC) charging for the battery.
The EG1615 employs an LC-resonant Dual Active Bridge (DAB) topology to achieve bidirectional energy control. By matching the PWM operating frequency with the LC resonant parameters, soft-switching control of the power switches is achieved, making it well-suited for high switching frequency and high-efficiency applications.
When the EG1615 operates in inverter boost mode, the low-voltage-side H-bridge runs at a 50% duty cycle, while the high-voltage-side H-bridge uses the internal body diodes of the MOSFETs for rectified output. Voltage feedback employs a shallow closed-loop regulation mode (i.e., no-load peak voltage limiting with open-loop operation under load), effectively preventing component damage caused by excessive voltage at no load. Resonant parameters are adjusted via external LC components. The IC supports PWM operating frequencies from 40 kHz to 150 kHz. A current transformer in series on the high-voltage side can be used for output short-circuit protection.
When the EG1615 operates in charger buck mode, the high-voltage-side H-bridge runs at a 50% duty cycle, while the low-voltage-side H-bridge uses the internal body diodes of the MOSFETs for rectified output along with automatic synchronous rectification tracking. The CV/CC charging function requires coordination with the PFC voltage regulation feature of the EG8026. A current transformer in series on the high-voltage side can be used for output short-circuit protection.
