Introduction
The DRV8304 device is an integrated gate driver suitable for three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor applications that require 12V and 24V DC power rails. These applications include field-oriented control (FOC), sinusoidal current control, and trapezoidal current control of BLDC motors. The device integrates three current sense amplifiers (CSA) to sense the phase currents of the BLDC motor, enabling an optimal FOC and current control system implementation. The AUTOCAL function can automatically calibrate the CSA offset error, thus enabling accurate current sensing. The device is based on the Smart Gate Drive (SGD) architecture, eliminating the need for any external gate components (resistors and Zener diodes) while providing comprehensive protection for external FETs. The SGD architecture optimizes the dead time to avoid any shoot-through issues, offers flexibility in reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) through gate slew rate control technology, and prevents any gate short-circuit issues through the gate-source voltage (VGS) handshake and dead-time insertion methods. The strong pull-down current also prevents any dv/dt gate turn-on. The device supports various PWM control modes (1x, 3x, 6x, and independent mode), enabling a simple interface connection to a control circuit that can be powered by a 30mA, 3.3V internal regulator. These modes can reduce the number of output peripherals of the controller according to specific motor control requirements and provide control flexibility. The device also has a 1x mode, enabling sensor-based trapezoidal control of the BLDC motor using an internal block commutation table. The device can also be configured to drive multiple loads (such as solenoids) in independent mode. Low-power sleep mode 3.3V, 30mA linear regulator Integrated protection features VM under-voltage lockout (UVLO) Charge pump under-voltage (CPUV) MOSFET drain-source voltage (VDS) over-current protection (OCP) MOSFET breakdown protection Gate driver fault (GDF) Thermal warning and thermal shutdown (OTW/OTSD) Fault status indicator (nFAULT)
