Introduction
The TPS23754 and TPS23756 devices feature an integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE) Powered Device (PD) interface and a current-mode DC/DC controller optimized specifically for isolated converters. This PoE interface supports the IEEE 802.3at standard. The TPS23754 and TPS23756 support multiple input voltage ORing options, including highest voltage, external adapter preference, and PoE preference. These features enable designers to determine which power source takes on the load under any circumstances. The PoE interface has the new extended hardware classification required for compatibility with high-power midspan Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) (compliant with the IEEE 802.3at standard). The signature detection pin can also be used to force the PoE power off. A single resistor can be used to set the classification to any of the defined categories. The DC/DC controller employs two complementary gate drivers with programmable dead time. This simplifies the design of active clamp forward converters or optimized gate drivers, enabling efficient flyback topologies. If only a single MOSFET topology is required, the second gate driver can be disabled. The controller also features internal soft start, bootstrap start-up power, current-mode compensation, and a maximum duty cycle of 78%. A programmable and synchronizable oscillator can optimize the design for efficiency and simplify the use of the controller to upgrade existing power supply designs. Precise programmable blanking with a default period simplifies the balance of common current sensing filter designs. The TPS23754 device has a converter start-up voltage threshold of 15V, while the TPS23756 device has a converter start-up voltage threshold of 9V. The TPS23754 - 1 replaces the PPD pin with a no-connect connection state, increasing the pin spacing.
