Introduction
The SN55LVDS31, SN65LVDS31, SN65LVDS3487, and SN65LVDS9638 devices are differential line drivers that implement the electrical characteristics of Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS). This signal transmission technology reduces the output voltage levels of 5V differential standard levels (such as TIA/EIA-422B), thereby reducing power consumption, increasing switching speed, and enabling operation with a 3.3V power supply rail. When enabled, any of the four current-mode drivers will provide a minimum differential output voltage amplitude of 247mV into a 100Ω load. The intended applications of these devices and the signal transmission technology are point-to-point and multipoint (one driver and multiple receivers) data transmission over a controlled-impedance medium of approximately 100Ω. This transmission medium can be a printed circuit board trace, a backplane, or a cable. The ultimate data transmission rate and distance depend on the attenuation characteristics of the medium and the noise coupling in the environment. The SN65LVDS31, SN65LVDS3487, and SN65LVDS9638 devices are rated for an operating temperature range of –40°C to 85°C. The SN55LVDS31 device is rated for an operating temperature range of –55°C to 125°C.
