Introduction
The UCD3138A is a digital power controller that offers high integration and excellent performance in a single-chip solution. Its flexible features make this device suitable for a wide range of power conversion applications. Additionally, various on-chip peripherals have been specifically optimized to enhance the performance of AC/DC and isolated DC/DC applications and reduce the number of solution components in information technology (IT) and network infrastructure spaces.
The UCD3138A controller is a fully programmable solution that allows users to have full control over relevant applications. At its core is a digital control loop peripheral, also known as the Digital Power Peripheral (DPP). Each DPP implements a high-speed digital control loop, which consists of a dedicated Error Analog-to-Digital Converter (EADC), a PID-based dual-pole/dual-zero digital compensator, and a DPWM output with a pulse width resolution of 250 ps.
This device also includes a 12-bit, 267 ksps general-purpose ADC with up to 14 channels, timers, interrupt control, PMBus, and UART communication ports. It is based on a 32-bit ARM7TDMI-S Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microcontroller, which can perform real-time monitoring, configure peripherals, and manage communication. The ARM microcontroller executes its programs from programmable flash memory, on-chip RAM, and ROM.
In addition to the DPP, the controller has new dedicated power management peripherals. These not only maintain high efficiency across the entire operating range but also offer high integration (which can improve power density), high reliability, and the lowest total system cost. They also provide flexible support for a large number of control schemes and topologies. Such peripherals include light-load burst mode, synchronous rectification, automatic mode switching, input voltage feedforward, copper trace current sensing, ideal diode emulation, constant current/constant power control, synchronous rectification soft start and stop, peak current mode control, flux balancing, secondary-side input voltage sensing, high-resolution current sharing, and hardware-configurable soft start with pre-biased voltage.
Topology support has been optimized for voltage-mode and peak current-mode controlled phase-shifted full bridges, single and dual-phase Power Factor Correction (PFC), bridgeless PFC, hard-switched full and half bridges, and LLC half and full bridges.
The UCD3138A is a functional variant of the UCD3138 digital power controller, with significant improvements. It has enhanced the accuracy and performance of the general-purpose ADC in extremely low temperature (-40°C) environments. The UART peripheral has a new hardware-based automatic baud rate adjustment function. A new synchronous rectification dead-time optimization hardware peripheral has been added, offering benefits such as improved efficiency, reduced synchronous rectification voltage stress, and a shorter development cycle. A duty cycle read function has been added to improve device usage in peak current mode.
