Introduction
TPD2S300 is a single-chip USB Type-C port protection solution that provides 20V V_BUS short-circuit overvoltage protection and IEC ESD protection for the CC1 and CC2 pins.
Since the release of the USB Type-C connector, many non-compliant products and accessories have appeared on the market, such as USB Type-C power delivery adapters that supply 20V on the V_BUS line. Additionally, due to the close pin pitch of the USB Type-C connector, mechanical twisting, sliding, debris, and moisture can cause the 20V V_BUS to short to the CC pins.
These non-ideal conditions expose the CC pins to 20V. The TPD2S300 addresses this by providing overvoltage protection on the CC pins, enabling them to withstand 20V without disrupting normal operation. The device places high-voltage FETs in series on the CC lines; when a voltage exceeding the OVP threshold is detected, the high-voltage switch opens, isolating the rest of the system from the high-voltage condition on the connector.
Finally, most systems require IEC 61000-4-2 system-level ESD protection for external pins. The TPD2S300 integrates IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection for the CC1 and CC2 pins, eliminating the need to externally place high-voltage TVS diodes on the connector.
