Introduction
The MSP430FR604x and MSP430FR504x SoCs belong to the MSP430 ultrasonic sensing microcontroller (MCU) series. They are powerful and highly integrated, designed for various industrial applications. These MCUs offer an integrated ultrasonic sensing solution (USS_A) module, which can provide high-precision measurements for multiple flow rates. The USS module is highly integrated and requires very few external components, which helps achieve ultra-low-power metering and reduces system cost.
The MSP430FR604x and MSP430FR504x devices use a low-power accelerator (LEA), enabling high-speed signal acquisition based on ADC and subsequent optimized digital signal processing. They provide an ideal ultra-low-power, high-precision metering solution for battery-powered metering applications.
The USS_A module includes a programmable pulse generator (PPG) and a physical interface (PHY) with a low-impedance output driver to achieve optimal sensor excitation and accurate impedance matching, thus achieving the best results in zero-flow drift (ZFD). The USS_A module also contains a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and a high-speed 12-bit 8Msps Σ - Δ ADC (SDHS), facilitating accurate signal acquisition through industry-standard ultrasonic sensors.
In addition, the MSP430FR604x and MSP430FR504x also integrate other peripherals to improve the system's integration in metering. It has a metering test interface (MTIF) module, which can indicate the flow rate measured by the meter through pulse generation. It also has an on-chip 8-channel multiplexed LCD driver (MSP430FR604x only), a real-time clock (RTC), a 12-bit SAR ADC, an analog comparator, an advanced encryption (AES256) module, and a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) module.
The MSP430FR604x and MSP430FR504x MCUs are supported by a wide range of hardware and software ecosystems, with reference designs and code examples provided for quick start of design. The development kits include the MSP - TS430PN80C 80-pin target development board and the EVM430 - FR6043 ultrasonic air flow meter EVM. Free software is also available, including the ultrasonic sensing design center, the ultrasonic sensing software library, and the MSP430Ware software.
The MSP430FR604x and MSP430FR504x MCU series integrate FRAM (ferroelectric RAM) and an MSP system architecture with overall ultra-low power consumption, enabling system designers to improve performance while reducing energy consumption. FRAM technology combines the low-power fast writing, flexibility, and durability of RAM with the non-volatility of flash memory.
