Introduction
The SM72441 is a programmable MPPT controller capable of driving four PWM gate signals for a four-switch buck-boost converter. Used in conjunction with the SM72295 (photovoltaic full-bridge driver), it provides a solution with up to 98.5% efficiency for DC-DC converters in MPPT configurations. The device integrates an 8-channel, 12-bit ADC for sensing input and output voltages, currents, and board configuration. Externally programmable parameters include maximum output voltage and current, as well as various settings for slew rate and soft-start.
The SM72441 uses an advanced digital controller to generate PWM signals. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm monitors input current and voltage and controls the PWM duty cycle to maximize energy harvested from photovoltaic modules. MPPT performance is extremely fast, typically converging to the module's maximum power point within 0.01 seconds, enabling the controller to maintain optimal performance under rapidly changing irradiance conditions.
Transitions between buck, boost, and buck-boost modes are seamless, and advanced digital PWM dithering is employed to improve effective PWM resolution. Output voltage and current limiting functions are integrated in the digital control logic. The controller handles both short-circuit and no-load conditions and recovers smoothly from both.
The SM72441 features a soft-start function that ramps its output voltage over a fixed period of 250ms. If the load current exceeds the minimum current threshold, MPPT mode will be entered during soft-start. Otherwise, upon completion of soft-start, the device enters buck-boost operation with a 1:1 input-to-output voltage ratio.
The maximum output voltage of the SM72441 is set by the resistor divider ratio on pin A0. The maximum output current can be configured by adjusting the resistor divider on A4 (pin 18). The AIIN and AIOUT pins are used to set the current thresholds for transitioning from standby (buck-boost mode) to MPPT mode and from MPPT mode back to standby. The AVIN pin is a...
