Introduction
The TPS203x series power distribution switches are designed for applications that may encounter heavily capacitive loads and short circuits. These devices are 50-mΩ N-channel MOSFET high-side power switches. The switch is controlled by a logic enable compatible with 5V and 3V logic. Gate drive is provided by an internal charge pump designed to control the rise and fall times of the power switch, minimizing inrush current during switching. The charge pump requires no external components and allows operation from supplies as low as 2.7V.
When the output load exceeds the current-limiting threshold or a short circuit occurs, the TPS203x limits output current to a safe level by switching to constant-current mode and pulls the overcurrent (OC) logic output low. When sustained severe overloads and short circuits increase power dissipation in the switch, causing junction temperature to rise, the thermal protection circuit shuts down the switch to prevent damage. Recovery from thermal shutdown is automatic once the device cools to a sufficiently low temperature. Internal circuitry ensures the switch remains off until a valid input voltage is present.
TPS203x devices differ only in short-circuit current threshold. The TPS2030 limits current at 0.3A, the TPS2031 at 0.9A, the TPS2032 at 1.5A, the TPS2033 at 2.2A, and the TPS2034 at 3A. The TPS203x is available in 8-pin SOIC and 8-pin DIP packages, with an operating junction temperature range of -40°C to 125°C.
