Introduction
The MSP430 family of ultra-low-power microcontrollers comprises a wide range of devices with different peripheral sets targeting various applications. This architecture, combined with five low-power modes, is specifically optimized to extend battery life in portable measurement applications. The device features a powerful 16-bit RISC CPU, 16-bit registers, and a constant generator that contributes to maximum code efficiency. The digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) enables wake-up from low-power mode to active mode in less than 1µs.
The MSP430G2x21/G2x31 series are ultra-low-power mixed-signal microcontrollers with an integrated 16-bit timer and 10 I/O pins. The MSP430G2x31 series incorporates a 10-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter and built-in communication capability using synchronous protocols (SPI or I2C).
Typical applications include low-cost sensor systems that capture analog signals, convert them to digital values, and then process the data for display or transmission to a host system.
The MSP430 CPU features a 16-bit RISC architecture that is highly transparent to the application. All operations (except program flow instructions) are executed as register operations with seven addressing modes for source operands and four addressing modes for destination operands.
The CPU is integrated with 16 registers, enabling reduced instruction execution time. Register-to-register operation execution time is one cycle of the CPU clock.
Four of these registers (R0 through R3) are dedicated as the program counter, stack pointer, status register, and constant generator, respectively. The remaining registers are general-purpose registers.
Peripherals are connected to the CPU via data, address, and control buses, and can be controlled using all instructions.
The instruction set comprises 51 core instructions with three formats and seven addressing modes, plus additional instructions for extended address range support. Each instruction can operate on both word and byte data.
The MSP430 supports one active mode and five software-selectable low-power operating modes. An interrupt event can wake the device from any low-power mode, process the request, and return to the low-power mode upon receiving the return signal from the interrupt routine.
