The TMD2755 integrates proximity detection and digital ambient light sensing. The module has an extremely narrow profile of only 1.1 mm and integrates an infrared VCSEL with a factory-calibrated driver. The proximity detection function detects reflected infrared energy via a photodiode (emitted by the integrated VCSEL) to enable object detection (e.g., the distance between a mobile device screen and the user's ear). Detection/release events are interrupt-driven, triggered when proximity results exceed configured upper and/or lower threshold limits. The proximity engine features wide-range offset adjustment to compensate for unwanted infrared energy reflections at the sensor. Proximity detection results are further improved through automatic ambient light subtraction. Both the ambient light sensing and infrared photodiodes are equipped with dedicated data converters that produce 16-bit data. This architecture enables applications to accurately measure ambient light, allowing devices to calculate illuminance for display backlight control.
