Difference Between SMD Capacitors and Electrolytic Capacitors

This week, ROQANG, a supplier of LCSC electronics, will be sharing information about capacitors. The following section will provide an overview of SMD capacitors and electrolytic capacitors, as well as a comparison of the differences between SMD capacitors and electrolytic capacitors.

What Is An SMD Capacitor?

SMD capacitors and electrolytic capacitors are two of the most common types of capacitors on the market. SMD capacitors are a highly prevalent component in a multitude of electronic products, with a market share exceeding 80%. While electrolytic capacitors are also widely used, their popularity is relatively limited. SMD capacitors still have some limitations. The rapid development of the electronics industry has led to a trend towards miniaturization and chip-type electronic devices. This has made SMD capacitors the main force in the market.

What Is An Electrolytic Capacitor?

Electrolytic capacitors are polarized capacitors. When using them, it is essential to pay attention to the polarity of the connected circuit. Their capacity can be very large, but their high-frequency characteristics are not very good. They are suitable for power supply filtering and other occasions. Of course, there are also electrolytic capacitors with good high-frequency characteristics—tantalum electrolytic capacitors. Tantalum dot electrolytic capacitors are relatively more expensive. SMD capacitors are non-polar capacitors, so there is no need to consider access issues. SMD capacitors are small in size, low in price, and have good high-frequency characteristics, such as ceramic capacitors, monolithic capacitors, polyethylene (CBB) capacitors, etc. However, SMD capacitors are not suitable for large capacity.

A Comparison Between SMD Capacitors and Electrolytic Capacitors

As both SMD and electrolytic capacitors are classified as capacitors, their fundamental principles remain consistent. Both types of capacitor resist AC and DC, and both store and release charges. Let us now turn our attention to the differences between the two.

The full name of a surface mount capacitor is a multi-layered ceramic chip capacitor, which is a general term for most capacitors that can be surface-mounted. An electrolytic capacitor, on the other hand, is a type of capacitor classified by its nature.

The most significant difference of an electrolytic capacitor is the use of an electrolyte inside. To prevent rupture caused by overvoltage or overheating, the top of an electrolytic capacitor is usually equipped with a safety vent, which also serves as a simple method to distinguish between solid-state capacitors and electrolytic capacitors.

SMD capacitors are divided into two categories: non-polar capacitors and polar capacitors. Polar capacitors are generally called electrolytic capacitors.

SMD capacitors generally have a relatively small volume, small capacity, and relatively high precision. In contrast, electrolytic capacitors have a relatively large volume, capacity, and come in a wider variety of types.

SMD capacitors play a considerable role in mid-to-high frequencies. They are small in size, high in voltage resistance, and have very low ESR at high-frequency resonance points. They usually serve as mid-to-high frequency filtering. For filtering in the low and mid frequency spectrum, electrolytic capacitors are typically the first consideration. It’s important to note that most electrolytic capacitors have polarity. Never reverse the positive and negative poles. Even if the polarity is accidentally reversed when measuring with an ordinary multimeter, the capacitor may become unusable.
